Arcbound Cemetery

Ready for some fun with modular? The moment I saw the Arcbound critters, my first thought was “yet another Urza

, and end up with an army of humongous bears!”

And then I did a monkey dance.

And THEN all the users of Cardshark who actually read the rules let me know that the above scenario is impossible – modular only allows transfers to artifact creatures. So alas, no massive bears. You could play a Needlebug

while all the transfer effects were on the stack, though. That’s one big bug coming at your opponent next turn…

Upon recovering myself, I took a look at the decklist to see if the idea still has meaning, and for the most part, I think it does. Although you have to be a bit more cautious about sacrificing everything to the Husk (always keep an artifact creature around to pump), the central idea of the deck seems intact. The only thing not intact is my credibility; thanks to all the clever folks who (very politely) pointed out that I was full of it.

So, the deck:

This deck utilizes an elf toolkit to tutor for answers to particular decks, and can be tailored to match your local metagame. Like all Rock-style decks, it’s slow to get going, and requires a fair amount of patience to play. If you have a Husk, a Herald, and three other creatures on the board, there’s always the chance to end the game, even ignoring any modular tricks that might also come up (sacrifice everything to the Husk, tutoring for the Caller, play the Caller, and sac him and your new bears to the husk, deal 20 damage to your opponent).

I tried to avoid breaking the bank, so in lieu of running four of the rare Arcbound creatures, I included a Fierce Empath

are perennial favorites for decks of this type, and I had a hard time letting them go. For one thing, they smooth any mana issues, especially in the case of sideboard cards. In addition, they’re a decent target for your +1/+1 counters, given that they fly. In the final analysis, I decided that the mana acceleration is not all that critical in this case. Also, when the Stinger dies, it passes its bounty to another deserving artifact creature.

One sideboard card in particular always makes people laugh, but I will bring Gaea’s Herald in against counter-heavy decks every day of the week and twice on Sundays. The whole point of running one-of utility creatures is to get to reuse their effects as they return from the graveyard. You don’t get to use their effects unless they get into play. Gaea’s Herald will ensure that. It’s an elf, so I can pull it out of the deck. It’s a pain in the butt. There’s my (possibly silly) defense of that particular crap rare.

The other sideboard cards are fairly self explanatory. Barter in Blood

in place of the additional elves in the sideboard, or maybe even in the maindeck.

Darksteel added some real juice to the possible return of the Rock, and it’s a deck that will definitely hone your play skills. There will be at least one or two game situations in a given match that require some strategic thinking, and that’s always a good thing. This particular version is also relatively inexpensive, and doesn’t require playsets of the rares it does use. Give it a whirl – you won’t be disappointed.
