There’s an old adage about not doing a certain thing in a place that you normally eat. That’s the first thing I thought of when I saw Furnace DragonFurnace Dragon

 | Set: Darksteel Cost: 9 Color: Red Type: Creature Sub Type: Dragon Rarity: R Number: 62 Artist: Matthew D Wilson Power: 5 Toughness: 5 Text: Affinity for Artifacts, Flying. When Furnace Dragon comes into play if you played it from your hand remove all artifacts from the game. |
. On review, however, I realized that there’s some chance that this card could see play in Mirrodin Block Constructed. Now, bear with me while I justify that statement.
First, you can’t swing a cat without hitting an Affinity deck in regular old Type 2, so one would assume that you’ll see it quite a bit in block. In the endless stream of Affinity v. Affinity matchups, Furnace DragonFurnace Dragon

 | Set: Darksteel Cost: 9 Color: Red Type: Creature Sub Type: Dragon Rarity: R Number: 62 Artist: Matthew D Wilson Power: 5 Toughness: 5 Text: Affinity for Artifacts, Flying. When Furnace Dragon comes into play if you played it from your hand remove all artifacts from the game. |
is one heck of a board sweeper. Symmetrical effects are always tough to gauge, but there’s a very significant factor in evaluating Furnace DragonFurnace Dragon

’s effect: you get to keep the dragon. And regeneration effects don’t help, because the cards are leaving the game, not heading to the graveyard. So, you’re opponent’s mana base goes away, his BroodstarBroodstar

, which removed only your board from the game, but promised to return it, for a 7/7 flyer. Furnace DragonFurnace Dragon

is strictly better, because it simply resets a large portion of the board on both sides.
Second, you can take advantage of some of the faster cards in Mirrodin. Slith FirewalkerSlith Firewalker

is simply insane. A bigger-than-usual commitment to red can take the edge off nasty artifact combos and provide some early board control.

and a ridiculous number of cycling cards to keep the board clean in the meantime. It’s obnoxious how many times I ended up simply burning my opponent to death before a dragon hit the board. With the Sliths and the Blasts, this deck can accomplish the same thing. It’s deceptively quick out of the box, and depending on circumstances, a turn one Slith FirewalkerSlith Firewalker

isn’t handy, I wanted to leave some room for some card drawing. It’s a funky two-of, and I’ve considered going to three and three – you might want to fiddle.
There’s also the usual card drawing madness with ThirstThirst

. Basically, the faster you get the Dragon out, the better, and the card drawing helps you get the pieces together. It also helps you win the rebuilding war.
The tension, of course, is between running practically all artifact mana sources and packing a closer that will remove all your artifacts from the game. I repeat: you have to get the Dragon out as soon as possible. In the meanwhile, you’ll simply look like a weird Affinity deck.
