CardShark Content - Nick Rohr (9/23/2001)

Have you ever won a game so proudly that your head almost exploded flinging ego drippings and chunks everywhere? I’m sure all players have had that one game where they could think to themselves, ´´I could stop… just end it now, where would be the fun in that?´´ So you take your time to savor every play. Or maybe just had that one play that made you say ´´HA!´´ Even if you didn’t win.
Here’s another one of those stories…
I was playing Mono-Back Mercs, my opponent was playing Mono-green Nature’s Revolt deck. I was holding a Living Death just in case he’d some how manage to kill off my Mercs. I had 5 Swamps in play and in hand I had Culling the Weak, Phyrexian Driver, Living Death. In play I had 4 Skulking Fugitives, 1 Cateran Kidnappers and a Phyrexian Driver. He had 24 life. The win was farther stretching from me because last turn he had cast Nature’s Revolt and had 18 untapped Forests in play. I had 20 life. I figured I’d land that last strike. I tapped 3 Swamps and cast Phyrexian Driver. I attacked for 20 damage and left one land untapped. I guess I forgot it was a creature, but my forgetfulness benefited me. He chose not to block so he could deal more than 20 damage to kill me. After he took 20 damage, he questioned if I was done. I almost said yes, when suddenly I saw the perfect play. In my graveyard were 2 Highway Robbers. He was now at 4 life. I sacrificed the Driver that I had cast that turn and tapped a swamp. A puzzled look adorned his face, but puzzled wasn’t what it looked like once I finished. ´´I pay 1 black to cast Culling the Weak…´´ I began. A twisted look found its way to my face. ´´I tap another swamp I now have 5 black mana in my mana pool…´´ Even before I finished right after I said I had 5 black and he looked at my graveyard, he knew what was coming. Long story short I cast Living dealing, dropping both Highway Robbers into play, dealing the final 4 damage to him and also all of his lands.
Well, this red deck has given me the most of these plays. It holds your opponent down and beats the Bubbling Muck out of them. The one I made is so fun to play too. Its burn mixed with land destruction, and man is it fun to play. It also uses one of my favorite cards, which is VERY underrated. The Keldon Champion, instant 3 damage to an opponent then moves on to give you a echoing, haste 3/2 creature…all for 4 mana! Avalanche Riders is another one of those ´´favorite cards´´ I play with. 2/2 Echo, Haste, When AR enters play destroy target land. It’s pretty good for 4 mana.
The Big Red Hurt
Red (36)
4:Avalanche Riders (2/2 and land destruction)
4:Keldon champion (3 damage and 3/2)
4:Seal of Fire (Delayed Shock)
4:Shock (2 damage)
2:Thundermare (OOOOOH yeah…everyone taps in the presence of the Thundermare)
4:Stone Rain (Picks off a land)
4:Cave-In (Tapped out? How about a Steam Blast?)
2:Implode (Destroys a land \ Gives you a card)
4:Pillage (Choose to either pick off land or artifact)
2:Seismic Mage (Turns useless cards in your hand into land destruction)
2:Earthquake (Picks off creatures \ Damages players)
Land (24)
4:Sandstone Needle
16:Mountain
2:Wasteland (Picks off non-basic land)
2:Dust Bowl (Picks off non-basic land)
That’s a real fun deck to play. Unfortunately, not all of us have or can afford all those rares and uncommons. So for the convenience of commons players, I also made this deck in commons form.
Red (40)
4:Turf Wound
4:Stone Rain
4:Shock
4:Incenerate
4:Goblin Gardener
4:Lightning Bolt
4:Keldon Vandals
4:Mogg Fanatic
4:Seal of Fire
4:Fireblast
Land (20)20:Mountain
That deck works pretty well two with more of a simple theme. Turf Wound for added control and Goblin Gardener to ´´see if they’ll attack.´´ This is a fun deck to play in any case. It’s not just Burn and it’s not just Land destruction. It’s TWO, TWO, TWO DECKS IN ONE! But anyway, read more articles and you will become enlightened. Not necessarily mine, but it wouldn’t kill you (Notice how that plug just slipped itself into that sentence? Man, I’m not even trying any more…) This has been another Super-de-Duper deck by Nick Rohr.
