CardShark Content - Travis Cullum (2/9/2001)

In between PTQ seasons my friends and I usually don’t have anything to playtest for so we dust off the type 1 cards and make a deck. My friend Dave has the power nine so his decks can be pretty good and tough to beat. It’s hard for me with new expansions and needed singles for PTQ’s to have extra money for expensive type 1 cards. So what deck can cost under $100 dollars and beat $1000 decks? There is always Sligh and my favorite -- black discard. I have played black discard against a lot of expensive type 1 decks and it has held it’s own and even won me a few good cards. The deck is simple: strip your opponent’s hand and bust out a fatty like Negator or an old fashioned Hypnotic Specter. I even got a little land destruction to add to the discard and beatdown. For non-land permanent removal I have Nevinyrral’s disk, which works well with the Mishra’s Factories, and then I have Diabolic Edict for, of course, Morphling.

Here is the deck list with prices.

4:Phyrexian Negator (20.00)
4:Hypnotic Specter (5.00)
4:Hymn to Tourach (1.00)
4:Dark Ritual (If you don’t have 4 of these I will sell you my 4 for 20 bucks)
4:Duress (.75)
4:Diabolic Edict (.50)
4:Sinkhole (40.00)
3:Skittering Skirge (.75)
3:Nevinyrral’s Disk (12.00)
1:Demonic Tutor (5.00)
1:Demonic Consultation (1.50)
1:Mind Twist (4.00)
16:Swamps (You better have these)
4:Mishra’s Factory (8.00)
1:Strip Mine (2.00)
2:Wasteland (3.00)

All for less than just one of the power nine and I guarantee this will not make you the joke of the type 1 world. There is also nothing better than beating the pants of random cocky type 1 player and saying, “Ha, ha my deck cost as much as your Mox Sapphire.”
