CardShark Content - Travis Cullum (2/7/2001)

The Fires deck doesn’t gain as much in Type II from Planeshift as, oh say, BLACK RED, but it does get some significant changes that will improve it in many ways. To the main deck the changes should be in the form of Flametounge Kavu and Shivan Wurm. I think the kavu will be a very good addition to the Fires deck. It gives you a 4-power creature for 4 mana and a burn spell all rolled up into one. True, it doesn’t hit your opponent in the head but it will take out his blocker so you can come through with your army. I took out Ancient Hydra to make way for this great creature due to Ancient Hydra costing one more to play and usually not being able to kill creatures right when he hits the table. Although hydra does hit multiple targets and your opponent he usually only hits for four and is gone in a few turns.

Shivan Wurm is next on the list of changes. I think he isn’t worth playing 4 of but definitely worth playing. Anytime I can play with a fat 7/7 trample with a minor drawback I am going to. The reason the wurm isn’t worth playing four of is simple; sometimes you just don’t have a creature to gate due to a mass removal spell like Wrath of God. Let’s face it, how good is a 7/7 gating for 5 when he is all you have in your hand and I know when I’m recovering from a Wrath I don’t want to see him over a nice big Blastoderm. These guys are the only changes to the main I see making a big impact to Fires in Type II.

The sideboard for Fires gets a great card in Hull Breach. Finally, targeted enchantment removal for green/red that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to play. Not only does Hull Breach get that pesky Crusade, Saproling Burst, or Parallax Wave, but it also gets an artifact at the same time. I would sideboard it against a lot of matchups, especially Rebels and the mirror match. In the mirror match it can be a good tempo swing if you can take out a Saproing Burst and a Chimeric Idol at the same time. In my Fires Hull Breach replaced Tranquility which usually gets only one or two enchantments anyway.

Here is my updated Fires deck list.

4:Saproling Burst
4:Blastoderm
4:Chimeric Idol
4:Flametongue Kavu
4:Birds Of Paradise
4:Llanowar Elves
2:Shivan Wurm
2:Two-Headed Dragon
4:Fires of Yavimaya
3:Urza’s Rage
2:Ghitu Fire
4:Karplusan Forest
2:Dust Bowl
9:forest
8:Mountains

Sideboard
3:Hull Breach
3:Flashfires
3:Tangle
2:Obliterate
2:Canopy Serge
2:Kavu Chameleon

With the changes to the deck I think Fires has improved a great deal and will continue to be a powerhouse in Type II.
