Reinventing Casual Play (04.17.01)

Some of us players have discovered that Magic can gain competition pretty easily, and it mounts fast. Tension grows and people are at each other’s throats. Whatever happened to Magic for fun? This may seem like a big hill to climb, but it makes Magic more fun than playing to win. We all know the combo using Tolarian Academy, Mind Over Matter, and Stroke of Genius. I give credit to the masterminds behind that concept and the Wildfire decks worked fine. But that’s the thing, they worked, WORKED, we need to move on. Try some new ideas, Squirrel decks are fun, but how about variants. I mean try new ideas, like Altar of Dementia, mill their deck with squirrels (throw me a frickin bone here!). Get creative, host an Unglued tourney.

This deck tries to be original. It kills all players at the same time. I call it the KING LOSER deck. Best played in Multi-player game. Then see the looks on their faces. Nothing beats that.

Red (10)
4:Flame Rift (Damages all players)
4:Earthquake (Damages all players and creatures)
2:Firestorm (Damages all players and creatures)

Artifacts (4)
4:Barbed Wire (Damages all players)

Black (20)
4:Pestilence (Damages all players and creatures)
4:Crypt Rats (Direct Damage to all players and creatures)
4:Forsaken Wastes (Damages all players\Disables all life gaining)
4:Lim-Dul’s Hex (Damages all players)
4: Plague Spitters (Damages all players)

Land (26)
13:Mountain
13:Swamp

You get the idea. Just damage everyone and everything. It’s a deck based on draws. Not your style?

Try something new. Sligh isn’t just a word they just came up with off hand! Name yourself after a deck that’s new and works. Word spreads.

Here’s a crazy idea. Each player brings a bunch of commons. Decide on how this works (i.e.- people use their own pile or share, or trade piles, etc.) then each player supplies the lands too. Then, each player (time allotted or not) makes a deck right there! Something I’d like to see is a tourney with only Counterspell decks. To see who could safely cast something and how many counters would pile up on top of each other.

Or perhaps an all Burn tourney. To see could end the game the fastest using those chess clocks.

See, casual play, in all essence, is the best part about Magic. It reduces competition and raises the fun value of the whole game. With that said I’m going to go make an Unglued deck and try it out on some friends.
