CardShark Content - Johnny Lai (5/31/2001)

Who knew Goblins would react that way to music?

In this installment of decks for Commons Format, we'll be
revealing a deck with a third turn kill. Yes, you read
that right, a third turn kill.

The ´´Goblin Song´´ deck is designed around the card Song of
Blood, a Visions common which reads: 1R, Sorcery, put the
top four cards from your library into your graveyard.
Whenever a creature attacks this turn, it gets +1/+0 for
each creature card put into your graveyard in this way. As
you will see, this is an extremely powerful card when put
into a correctly designed deck.

Let's get to the decklist:

´´Goblin Song´´

4 Goblin Patrol
4 Mogg Constripts
4 Raging Goblins
4 Mogg Fanatic
4 Mogg Raider

4 Goblin Raider
4 Mogg Flunkies

4 Fireslinger
4 Goblin Matron

4 Song of Blood
2 Trumpet Blast
18 Mountains

This deck is very simple to play and quite fun. You can
sometimes win with a lot of fast creatures with Fireslinger
and Mogg Fanatic to help clear the way. However, when
functioning ideally, the deck is a kind of creature-
based ´´combo deck´´ in that it wants creatures + Song of
Blood for the quick kill.

Here's a third turn kill which is not at all unlikely:

Mountain, Mogg Constripts, go.
Mountain, Mogg Raider, Mogg Fanatic, attack for 2 go.
Mountain, Raging Goblin, Song of Blood [revealing three
creatures], attack with all four creatures for 17, after
combat you sac Fanatic and WIN.

Deck Content Analysis

The key to this deck is to include lots of creatures to
maximize the power of Song of Blood. This deck is packed
with 36 low-cost creatures: There are 20 one-mana goblins,
12 two-mana creatures, and 4 three-mana creatures. Thus,
60% of the deck of composed of creatures. All of the
creatures are inexpensive to cast, so you can quickly drop
creature after creature.

Mogg Constripts and Goblin Patrol are both 2-power, one-
drops which are fantastic for fast beatdown. Given the
high creature-count in this deck, Mogg Conscripts rarely
fails to meet its condition that a creature needs to be
cast that turn for it to be able to attack. Raging Goblin
works well with Mogg Constripts, jumping into play for its
hasted attack as well as enabling Conscripts to attack.
Fireslinger and Mogg Fanatic can be used to help clear the
way for your weenie dorks. Mogg Raider, which allows you
to sacrifice a goblin to give a target creature +1/+1 until
end of turn, provides some combat tricks, either to bring
down a large blocker or sneaking in damage by targeting
unblocked creatures.

The Mogg Raider works very well with Goblin Matron. First
of all, the Matron replaces itself by fetching another
Goblin, so you've more willing to sacrifice it to the Mogg
Raider. If you have four mana and your opponent is low on
life, you can cast the Matron, fetching a Mogg Raider, and
cast the Raider. This gives you two additional points of
power during that turn's combat. If you already had the
Mogg Raider in play, you can chose to fetch a Raging Goblin
so it can attack and you can still sac the Matron.

While Goblins are fast to cast, they are, quite frankly,
not the most powerful creatures around. Therefore, they
need some musical inspiration to fight bravely: Song of
Blood and Trumpet Blast. There is always a degree of
chance involved in playing Song of Blood, but on average
should give at least +2/+0 to all of your creatures. Since
this deck is 60% creatures, Song of Blood will often will
give all your creatures +3/+0, which is practically an
Overrun for two mana. As you can see from the above
example, it can lead to very fast kills.

Casual Note: Adding Uncommons for Casual Play

The non-commons version of this deck runs Goblin Recruiter
[reprinted in 7th Edition], which combos nicely with the
Song of Blood. Goblin Recruiter allows you to put any
number of Goblins on top of your library, which ensures
that Song of Blood will give your creatures +4/+0 next
turn. The recruiter adds more consistency to your Song of
Blood.

Conclusion

I hope you enjoy this Commons Format deck. Although this
deck is not as versatile as some others, you can pull off
some really spectacular wins with this deck. This deck is
fun to play casually because you can really amaze people
with the power of you ´´crappy commons deck´´ with fast wins
when you pull off a quick Song of Blood.

Final, a quick public service announcement: Moggs and
music don't mix. For your safety, please turn off your
radio when you're driving by Goblin Caves.
