This latest installment of Commons Corner introduces a white-red Rebel-burn deck featuring some powerful additions from Apocalypse. An Apocalypse card, Orim's Thunder, also enables the suitably ´´punny´´ deck name. Without further ado:
´´Thunder and Lighting´´
4 Dega Disciple (APOC)
4 Ramosian Sergeant
4 Fresh Volunteers
4 Goblin Legionaire (APOC)
2 Steadfast Guard
3 Defiant Falcon
1 Thermal Glider
2 Nightwind Glider
4 Orim's Thunder (APOC)
4 Rhystic Lighting
4 Lightning Blast
10 Mountains
14 Plains
The core of the deck lies in the Rebel engine. Ramosian Sergeants search for Fresh Volunteers, Steadfast Guards, and Defiant Falcons. The Defiant Falcons in turn search for the Gliders. Once you have a searcher active, its usually advantageous to search out more Rebels rather than casting threats from your hand.
Most people understand the power of the Rebel mechanic by now. What's interesting about this deck is the powerful
cards that Apocalypse provides.
Goblin Legionaire provides a 2/2 body that can sacrifice to deal 2 damage for one R mana or prevent 2 damage for W. Although you almost always want to use it as a big ´´Mogg Fanatic,´´ you may also have cause to use it to save one of your Rebel searchers from opposing burn spells.
Dega Disciple provides this deck with a much-needed additional one mana creature that has an aggressive ability. The Disciple's red ability (R, tap, target creature gets +2/+0 until end of turn) allows you to pump
up your Rebels for additional damage or to trade a 2/2 Rebel for a larger creature. Once a ground stall occurs, the Disciple can pump up your flying Rebels to continue the assault.
The ´´Thunder and Lighting´´ in the deck (Orim's Thunder, Rhystic Lightning and Lightning Blast) constitute the permanent removal in the deck. Orim's Thunder provides enchantment and artifact removal as well as sometimes
doubling as creature removal. Rhystic Lightning and Lightning Blast are there to clear the path when your opponent has created a ground stall or burn them out directly.
Conclusion
Thunder and lighting in the real world means that you will most likely seek shelter to save your life. If you play this deck, your opponents may have to seek shelter to save them from the power of ´´Thunder and Lightning.´´ Enjoy!
