´´DAD! You just killed Zombie Flanders!´´
´´Flanders was a Zombie?´´
-Homer Simpson

I bought my Apocalypse cards and I was a little disappointed. But, to be fair, I bought the Burial deck thinking it would give me more fodder for my Graveyard deck(s). But, to no avail, it had almost nothing to do with the graveyard. HOWEVER! It had Strength of Night, which is the key card. The only creatures are Zombies, but they all have potent abilities, so they do well on their own. Cards like Terminate, Diabolic Edict, Duress and Expunge help control the game. The first creature we’ll take a lot at is Putrid Warrior then go through the rest of the creatures in the deck.

Putrid Warrior, WB, Summon Soldier Zombie
Whenever PW deals damage, choose- each player gains 1 life or loses 1 life. 2/2
Very potent card. It has “use me” written all over it. Putrid Warrior can kind of deal an extra damage, but you lose a life, which is a small price to pay.

Maggot Corpse, B, Summon Zombie
When MC comes into play each player loses 1 life. 1/1
Quick creature that actually performs really well in almost any deck. Call me crazy, but this may be one of Black’s new staples. It lowers both totals, but gives you a creature, so the loss is easy to ignore. Maybe not powerful enough to be a staple to some players, but when I look at it, I see potential.

Lim-Dul’s Cohort, 1BB, Summon Zombies
Creatures blocking or blocked by Lim-Dul’s Cohort cannot regenerate this turn. 2/3
Making sure a Horned Troll or River Boa won’t regenerate is a good thing.

Carnophage, B, Summon Zombie
During your upkeep pay 1 life or tap Carnophage. 2/2
Another staple card for me. A 2/2 for B that drawback is like lose 1 life then your opponent loses 2 life. Tap it when you don’t feel like paying its upkeep cost.

Mournful Zombie, 2B, Summon Zombie
W,T: Target player gains 1 life. 2/1
Are you falling behind when it comes to life? The Ol’ Mournful Zombie will feel sympathy for you and heal you. Thankfully counteracts the Maggot Corpse payment or life lost to that Putrid Warrior.

Shivan Zombie, RB, Summon Barbarian Zombie
Protection from White. 2/2
This is a Grizzly Bear 2-mana quick weenie with an ability. It was placed here for that sole reason. It doesn’t serve too much of a purpose other than being a fast Zombie though.

Barrow Ghoul, 1B, Summon Zombie
At the beginning of your upkeep remove the top creature card in your graveyard from the game, or bury Barrow Ghoul. 4/4
A two-mana 4/4 is hard to beat, but its only drawback is you have to lose a creature. Maybe if you combine this with Quagmire , you could do some damage.

Quagmire , 2B, Summon Zombie
G, T: Sacrifice a creature: Destroy target enchantment. 2/2
Helps get rid of those annoying creature enhancers like Armor of Thorns, Briar Shield, etc. Can’t really help with Rancor, though. But can handle many other enchantments as well.

Llanowar Dead, BG, Summon Zombie Elf,
T: Add B to your mana pool. 2/2
Perhaps one of the MOST key cards in the deck. A two mana 2/2 that gives Black mana, which is what is needed the most in the deck.

Zombie Boa, 4B, Summon Zombie Snake, 1B
Choose a color. Whenever Zombie Boa becomes blocked by a creature of that color this turn, destroy that creature. Play this ability as a sorcery. 3/3

This helps make your opponent think twice about blocking with creatures of the chosen color and maybe should just let the Boa slide. Good card late in the game.

Anyway, on with the deck…
The Resident deck

Black (20)
2:Expunge
2:Barrow Ghoul
1:Zombie Boa
3:Maggot Carrier
1:Quagmire
1:Mournful Zombie
2:Diabolic Edict
2:Lim-Dul’s Cohort
2:Duress
4:Carnophage

Green (3)
3:Strength of Night

Gold (13)
4:Llanowar
4:Terminate
4:Putrid Warrior
1:Shivan Zombie

Land (24)
10:Swamp
6:Forest
4:Mountain
4:Plains

The deck works rather well against really any weenie deck. Off-hand, I can’t really think of any deck that could shut this one down indefinitely. It can handle many other deck types well seeing as how its got Terminates and if your opponent is packing Pro Black or Red, then Diabolic Edict will help.

Duress is definitely a staple. It goes well in any Black deck I can think of. Kind of like Dark Ritual, which I thought about putting in here, but decided to replace it with zombies.

Some other Zombies considered were Gravedigger or Scathe Zombies, but I was aiming for more speed than that and decided that Zombie Boa, Mournful Zombie, Lim-Dul’s Cohort and Quagmire were enough.
