CardShark Content - Michael LaLonde (8/5/2001)

The current Type 2 environment has become very set, and I have seen very few cool rouge decks. Black/White control is very powerful and is around a lot, as is Blue/Green Control. Blue/Green, in my opinion, is currently the most powerful deck out there, many combining Mystic Snake with bouncers. G/B has some very powerful cards but is missing a few spots keeping it from the top. I have done my best to make an unusual Type 2 deck...

Although many of you have seen it become somewhat popular in IBC tournaments, the idea of a domain deck has hardly hit the t2 yet. Although the only masques black card I use is War Tax, I find many of the base cards sufficient for this deck. These include Birds, Counterspell, and Disenchant.

Before I go into detail too much, here is my *master* decklist.

Creatures:

2:Cromat - Kill Card. This guy gets bigger, is really hard to kill, and can beat them down fast. He's ALMOST a morphling...oh wait, he's not even close, but he'll have to do until I get something better
4:Birds of Paradise - Utility Creature. Can't get mana screwed
2:Utopia Tree - See Birds of Paradise, except this card is much friutier...should be 1 mana.

Enchantments:

4:Collective Restaint - Heart and soul of the deck. This card makes them pay 5 at most for each attacker, which can be deadly to those saproling and b/w decks.
2:War Tax - If its getting to the late game and your opponent has plenty of mana for restraint, use this one to maximize his demise. This is the only masques block card, I won't break down in tears to see it go.
2:Overgrown Estate - This is an amazing card if you can get it to hit the table. 3 life for 1 land is an amazing deal.
4:Harrow - I play very few of some types of mana, so I rely on this card to fetch the ones I want

Instants/Sorcery:

4:Counterspell - I found adding Counterspell can really stop gamebreaking cards, mostly for those disenchants when their trying to kill my precious enchantments
4:Evasive Action - This card is killer in this deck. No one has 5 extra mana to pay for this one, and its a great deal for only 1 colored mana.
2:Global Ruin - This deck uses all basic lands for a reason. Pain lands are going around like crazy with these 2-4 colored decks, which all get destroyed with this crazy card.
4:Allied Strategies - Some people say they don't like the fact that it’s a sorcery, to play of them instead. I though about it but then I decided I'd rather just keep all 5 cards instead of having to discard one of the better ones.
2:Disenchant - Orbasition (Winter Orb/Opposition) is going crazy right now, I don't care what colors it is. Get rid of the orb with these guys and you should be just dandy

Land:

8:Island
7:Forest
4:Plains
3:Mountain
2:Swamp

The nice thing about this deck is how well it controls the game. Odd decks like these usually have trouble stuffing Counterspells in. The 8 counters in this one fit nicely to eliminate those killer spells against me. By the end of the game your opponent often must pay 10-20 mana per creature that they want to attack (which is hardly worth trying).

Now that you've seen my rouge deck, Here is the rest of t2

W/R Rebel

You may think this sounds really dumb, but Goblin Legionnaire is really awesome. 2/2 Pounder for 2, sac it, help to kill. You can play basically this whole deck at the end of your opponents turn, burning them and search for them. This deck has trouble with monger though...Add some wraths and/or Parallax Waves.

U/G Control

You could see this one coming. Waterfront Bouncer and Mystic Snake make a great team together. Arcane Laboratory sets the game off too. Mix it with Lots of Counterspells, maybe some Spontaneous Generations and you opponent won't know what to do.

G/B Control

This Deck may look amazing at first. Monger, Treefolk and Deed are all great. Add the Birds, Duress, Blastoderms, and then your left with some space. Toss in a little discard maybe, creature pump? I don't know, but this deck just doesn't have quite enough cards to fill it up right. It has got some real winners, but you can't win a game with 4 all-stars.

U/W Control

As much as we are seeing the opposing power colors of apocalypse, don't look away from this one for too long. Wraths, Routs, Counters, Absorbs, Moats, Mages, Millstones, Angels, ouch! This type has power cards in it. If you want to win some games, play this deck.

Fires/Dark Fires

Apocalypse has brought a lot of power to splashing into the fires decks. Spiritmonger is nice to go in to make your deck look really fat, as is deed. But really, there are a lot of Counterspells, Spectral Lynx ruined the derm, Duress is being played way too much. This environment is mostly control. All out aggressive decks lose to control, remember?

Penumeralate (Penumbra with Obliterate)

I love them name although I slaughtered the spelling on it. The penumbras from apocalypse and obliterate may go well together. I made an interesting variation with overabundance and Fervent Charge. Making Obliterate very easy to play and the penumbra's even more deadly.

That is about how I believe it will work. Rouge decks are very hard right now. It is a very competitive and un-inventive environment right now, I am curious to what the next set will bring.
